Obtaining
Obtained by cooking a Milk Bucket. Right clicking the resulting Bucket of Cheese Curds in the players main hand will result in the cheese surds separating from the bucket.

Trivia
Prior to 1.7.4, cooking Milk Bucket in a furnace would directly result in cheese curds, consuming the bucket and making this an expensive item. With the introduction of the Bucket of Cheese Curds item, the bucket can now be reclaimed from the recipe process.
